That Sugar Film

Last night we headed over to Byron Bay with a few staff to see the new documentary That Sugar Film, which is screening in select cinemas up until the end of March. As an added bonus the writer and star of the documentary Damon Gameau was there for a Q&A at the end of the film, which was the cherry on top of a very great sugar free cake. It was extremely informative on how sugar affects the body, exposing the questionable actions of the sugar industry as well as understanding how to identify potential hidden sugars in food labels. With a focus on how excess of natural sugars can be harmful to the body, and breaking the illusion of so called 'healthy food' – this film is a must see for young and old. It appears that we are definitely entering a new era where certain 'old fashioned' ways of looking at food and diet are being completely debunked by a generation who are seeing through the smoke screen of what we have been told to believe is 'good for us'. Not only this, but questioning why and by whom are we being fed these mistruths. The fact is the body does not lie and Damon boldly puts his body on the line to demonstrate this and the results were scientifically tracked and clearly undeniable. Don't worry if you missed out on the cinema screenings, it will be out on iTunes and DVD June/July, as well as on national TV. We hear they are also doing a run in schools too – it is very important and accessible film for all.

You can read the That Sugar Book by Damon Gameau at The Belle General while enjoying one of our refined sugar free meals or cakes. Yep, we are very conscious of the effects of all sugars, including fructose at The Belle. Most of the meals on our menu are 100% refined sugar free, the reason I cannot say completely is because the GF quinoa bread we use has a very slight sugar content. However we are waiting patiently for our sister shop Nourish to open its wholesale bakery and produce a sugar free loaf ....coming soon.  While we do use sugar in some cakes we are very conservative on the amounts we use as well as offering fructose free and refined sugar free options. Each day we are cutting more and more sugar out of the cakes we produce at The Belle General to bring you cleaner, healthier treat options... however, we recommend enjoying any cakes in moderation, a cake is a cake after all.

The first piece in our 'People of Interest' blog is dedicated to Jaemen Jamison – he is positive, creative, charismatic, sensitive, and a truly beautiful man, who we are lucky enough to be graced with in the kitchen here at The Belle General.

People really are what its all about for us at the Belle, people are awesome, and the reason we love this industry! It is a lovely thing to meet great new people and be able to appreciate each other and what we have to offer. We get to share our daily experiences with our staff and customers and in turn we get a glimpse into their lives, generating a warm community vibe.

Its also really cool learning what people are passionate about outside of their day jobs – so we really wanted to have a place to share the amazing stories of people that inspire us. I have really loved watching Jaemen's business come to life. He and his partner Libby have created a gem of a t-shirt company called We Dream Alone. All hailing out of their beach side house, which just happens to be two doors down from The Belle, on Shelly Beach Rd. Jae screen prints and hand dyes each piece lovingly, using locally sourced and Australian produced products. Libby is the marketing genius behind the label, together they make one hot team. He and Libby shared a one liner about the brand this is what they had to say.

'WDA aligns with the free-living attitude of today's radical chillers. Surf, skate and fashion enthusiasts that set trends and froth out on adventure.'

Classic! Love it guys!

When we first saw the space that is now The Belle General we knew instantly it had massive potential and on the spot we signed the lease, even though it was filled with sad & broken industrial kitchen equipment, had salmon and maroon colored walls and a bizarre wall dividing the room. The location was amazing and we couldn't believe that it was just sitting there waiting for us and a its new incarnation as The Belle.
What followed was a whirlwind of about 8 weeks renovating and getting everything ready for opening day. Sarah, Kyla and I have always toyed with the idea of opening our own place, having many different conversations over the years with heaps of different ideas. What we have ended up with we never could have imagined.... a bustling beach side cafe!
This came about with the experience of years in the hospitality industry and knowledge of the local area as well as interior design, project management, developing chef and pastry making skills and many other skill sets that apparently we have between us: there was and still is so much involved in it and I am thankful for the amazing women that we are today, not only for who we are and what we have done (& continue to do), but for the relationships we have developed over this time and the personal growth involved in a commitment of this level. The commitment we have made to each other and the business is worth celebrating – sure at times it gets a little tough but at the end of the day we love, trust and respect each other and this is what we return to. So in turn we can continue to grow the business and keep the space as a loving and inviting atmosphere.
Thanks everyone and big ups to us! See you at The Belle.
