That Sugar Film

Last night we headed over to Byron Bay with a few staff to see the new documentary That Sugar Film, which is screening in select cinemas up until the end of March. As an added bonus the writer and star of the documentary Damon Gameau was there for a Q&A at the end of the film, which was the cherry on top of a very great sugar free cake. It was extremely informative on how sugar affects the body, exposing the questionable actions of the sugar industry as well as understanding how to identify potential hidden sugars in food labels. With a focus on how excess of natural sugars can be harmful to the body, and breaking the illusion of so called 'healthy food' – this film is a must see for young and old. It appears that we are definitely entering a new era where certain 'old fashioned' ways of looking at food and diet are being completely debunked by a generation who are seeing through the smoke screen of what we have been told to believe is 'good for us'. Not only this, but questioning why and by whom are we being fed these mistruths. The fact is the body does not lie and Damon boldly puts his body on the line to demonstrate this and the results were scientifically tracked and clearly undeniable. Don't worry if you missed out on the cinema screenings, it will be out on iTunes and DVD June/July, as well as on national TV. We hear they are also doing a run in schools too – it is very important and accessible film for all.

You can read the That Sugar Book by Damon Gameau at The Belle General while enjoying one of our refined sugar free meals or cakes. Yep, we are very conscious of the effects of all sugars, including fructose at The Belle. Most of the meals on our menu are 100% refined sugar free, the reason I cannot say completely is because the GF quinoa bread we use has a very slight sugar content. However we are waiting patiently for our sister shop Nourish to open its wholesale bakery and produce a sugar free loaf ....coming soon.  While we do use sugar in some cakes we are very conservative on the amounts we use as well as offering fructose free and refined sugar free options. Each day we are cutting more and more sugar out of the cakes we produce at The Belle General to bring you cleaner, healthier treat options... however, we recommend enjoying any cakes in moderation, a cake is a cake after all.

$45.00 too expensive for a Sunday breakfast. I should not have built my own but had it off the menu. It was 1 egg on GF bread , avocado and mushrooms. A muffin and iced coffee which cost me $11.50 ( soya milk coconut Icecream) I was too surprised at the till so paid. I should have changed it to no muffin or iced coffee then would have been $26.00 this included $4.50 Sunday surcharge but more affordable . It does not pay to have healthy choices . I have learnt my lesson. It is a very popular place but you can’t go there if you are on a pension.
